Designed for a young couple, this home was envisioned as a calm, minimal, and highly functional space inspired by Japandi and Wabi-Sabi sensibilities. The brief focused on creating a clutter-free environment that feels open despite spatial limitations, while comfortably accommodating everyday needs such as dining and a dedicated study area. The intent was to strike a balance between utility and serenity, without compromising on warmth or character.

Viduran’s House draws inspiration from the founder’s first Wabi-Sabi holiday home in Kolkata, translating those principles into an urban residential setting. Rooted in Japandi aesthetics, the design embraces simplicity, natural textures, and muted tones. Smart space planning plays a key role, ensuring the compact home feels visually light and emotionally calm, with every corner thoughtfully designed to serve a purpose.

The material palette is restrained yet tactile, featuring veneer, rattan, limocoat, glass, terrazzo, and subtle Duco finishes on cabinetry. These materials lend the interiors a warm, natural character while remaining durable and understated. Carefully curated decor and furnishings from select brands add layers of personality, complemented by soft lighting and artistic accents that bring depth without visual clutter.

A major design intervention involved reworking the original 3 BHK layout into a more efficient 2 BHK configuration. One room was redesigned to seamlessly accommodate both the dining and study areas, resulting in a flexible, multifunctional space. The structural modification allowed for a custom terrazzo arch floor pattern that aligns precisely with the fixed dining seating, merging design expression with functional planning.

The hall acts as the heart of the home, effortlessly integrating dining and study functions while maintaining visual continuity. The terrazzo floor detailing enhances spatial flow, while the living area remains light and airy through simple furniture, curated decor, and natural textures. Across the home, each element reflects the Japandi/Wabi-Sabi ethos minimal, purposeful, and naturally elegant.

Sustainability was addressed through the use of repurposed and natural materials, prioritizing longevity and mindful consumption over excess. Spatial constraints and structural changes were resolved through thoughtful planning and cohesive detailing. The result is a warm, minimalistic home that celebrates simplicity and functionality, offering a peaceful retreat tailored to the lifestyle of a modern young couple.
